No Sound on Android

This note discusses issues with sound / audio when using Android based cell phones.

Click here if you are experiencing one way audio.

Number one problem:Click here if the phone only rings once or there is no audio when you answer.

Note: when the audio comes out of the cell phone instead of through the XLink, it is not a defective XLink. It is an Android software issue. Bluetooth is very clear and the cell phone is in charge of sending the audio to the appropiate place. The XLink cannot force it to do anything.

Recently, especially after updating Android, there are more reports of Android cell phones suddenly not sending the audio to the right place. Android cell phones have goten more complicated with each release and there seem to be more options and ways for the bluetooth audio settings to be setup wrong or get temporarily messed up. If no audio is coming out of the XLink then it is always a setting on the cell phone to fix this.

We are currently compiling more information on this and trying to understand what the easiest way to correct the issue is. It is usually a matter of tinkering with the settings on the cell phone until it starts performing correctly again.

This is a list of things to do if your Android cell phone stops sending the audio to the XLink properly. Once corrected, it will usually work properly again for a long time.

  1. First turn the cell phone and the XLink off and back on
  2. Try completely repairing the cell phone. This is often necessary after a major Android update.

    1. First go into the Bluetooth menu on the cell phone and tell it to 'Forget' XLink
    2. Then delete the connection on the XLink
    3. Cycle the power on both devices
    4. Next repair from scratch

  3. Check the Android cell phone settings
  4. While on an active call that was started with the XLink, there are options on the cell phone screen where to send audio (cell handset, speakerphone, XLink). Make sure XLink is selected.

Older versions of Android

There are now many different versions of android, some of the settings to check are listed below. Different versions of androids may or may not have these exact options and their names can vary between cell phone manufacturers.

  1. Go into the phones Bluetooth menu and find the Xlink Gateway device. Press and hold the Xlink Gateway so another menu comes up with more options. Enable the Audio to this Device
  2. Bring up the Bluetooth properties and click the gear icon next to the Bluetooth device name (Xlink Gateway). There should be two options available, media and call audio. Make sure call audio is enabled
